A house clearing can sometimes turn up a few surprising artefacts but it can’t be too often that an unexploded Second World War bomb is found. This was the case recently in Leicester, where staff from a local maintenance firm was removing items from a home.
After the item had been loaded into the back of the van, suspicions arose that it may be a bomb but rather than waiting and calling out the emergency services, the team drove the bomb to a local police station. This may not have been the best course of action to deal with a suspected bomb but thankfully the journey was uneventful and the police confirmed the initial suspicions.
A high rise block of flat was within the cordoned area
A cordon of 1,000 ft was placed around the police station where the van was parked outside forcing an evacuation of 50 residents from a nearby high rise black of flats. The Russell House block of flat mainly houses old age pensioners and the occupants were taken on a double decker bus to the Mecca Bingo hall, situated close-by. In addition to these residents, the bingo hall played host to over 50 staff and children from the Wonderland Nursey, making for a lively and entertaining time.
Snacks and drinks provided to all guests
Staff at the bingo hall provided refreshments for the evacuees and provided much needed shelter until the bomb was declared to contain no explosives and the area was safe to return to. With bingo being seen as a game that unites a community, it is good to see a bingo hall springing to action to provide a shelter at short notice for those that need it the most.
