There are a number of reasons why there are fewer people enjoying bingo in halls in the UK than a few years ago but one reason is definitely the smoking ban. Recent figures have shown an upturn in attendances, which will hopefully continue to increase, but on the whole, fewer people are playing bingo in the old halls than they were in previous years.

The smoking band was definitely introduced for the right reasons but unfortunately many people and businesses have suffered because of the new ruling. When looking at statistics, it is always possible to cite other factors and minimise the level of impact that one particular issue but there is no doubt that the smoking ban has not benefitted bingo halls.

Different culture but same result

This has been backed up by the situation in Spain where a smoking band has been implemented. Spanish culture may be different to UK culture in a number of reasons but they love to play bingo and many Spaniards love a smoke. Spain has also suffered from the recession in recent times but the drop in numbers for bingo halls in Spain replicates the drop in users at UK bingo halls after the smoking ban was introduced.

Many people will not be too upset at the drop in numbers because they believe there is a benefit to the greater good in reducing the places where people can smoke but that is not a view that is shared by bingo halls or communities. When people’s jobs or businesses are being affected, it is only right that they get the chance to air their disproval of the situation but there is unlikely to be any change in the legislation regarding smoking in buildings.
